Former Shrewsbury Town boss wants more promotion places

Former Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon wants more promotion places into League Two after his Tranmere side lost in the play-off final.

Micky Mellon’s Tranmere Rovers side, who finished 2nd in the National League, lost 3-1 to Forest Green Rovers in the play-off final.

A Kaiyne Woolery double and a goal from Christian Doidge, saw Forest Green Rovers enter the football league for the first time in their history.

Unlike the Championship, League One, and League Two – only the winners of the National League are automatically promoted.

Then sides that finish in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th are left to battle it out in the play-offs for the final promotion place.

Former Salop, Barnsley, and Fleetwood chief Micky Mellon wants to see the ruling changed.

He told BBC Radio Merseyside: “It’s easy for me to say it’s unfair but we know the rules at the start of the season.

“Looking at it broader than that, would I say there has to be two automatic and one from the play-offs? Yes.

“I think there are teams in the football league who are just hanging on and don’t have the ambition of many of the teams who are in the National League.

“But that’s not for me to decide, that’s for someone else.”
