It’s on your bikes, get set and go for hundreds of schoolchildren from across Shropshire who will be able to try cycling at a county sports festival on March 1st.

Shropshire’s Cycle Experience will put on a series of cycle games at the event at Shrewsbury Sports Village as part of their campaign to encourage cycling for all ages.

Over 7s can have a go at time trials and slaloms on a cycle track – and teachers are welcome to have a go too.

“We aim to develop bike skills while having fun. There are games such as cat and mouse when one tries to catch the other. We have “the squeeze” where two cyclists go through a cone funnel side by side and “sardines” when they have to cycle in an area which reduces in size,” said Benjamin Smith, Cycle Experience’s regional manager.

Try Cycling programmes are run in schools to get more people cycling, including children, parents and teachers.

A Balanceabilty in Schools programme trains teachers to deliver cycle training as part of PE lessons for youngsters aged 30 months to 6 years.

A video showing the benefits of balance bikes and a Balanceability pack showing all the equipment will be available for teachers so they can see how to encourage cycling for younger children.

The events are part of the winter 2016 Shropshire Homes School Sport Festival when hundreds of primary and secondary schoolchildren compete in a range of sports over three days.
