Dr Haydn Griffiths, headmaster of Wrekin College, said there was a growing sense of excitement as the school in Wellington prepare to host An Audience with Sir Garfield Sobers next Tuesday lunchtime.

He will be conducting a question and answer session in the Centenary Theatre from 12.30pm.

The former West Indies captain, who played for his country between 1954 and 1974, scored more than 8,000 Test runs at an average of 57.78. He also took 235 wickets.

As well as his glittering international career, Sir Garfield also played for Barbados, Nottinghamshire and South Australia.

Dr Griffiths said: “This is a tremendous chance for our pupils and their parents to listen to Sir Garfield Sobers reminiscing about his glorious cricketing career.

“There are also a limited number of tickets available free of charge for members of the public who would like to come along. We are very much looking forward to welcoming Sir Garfield to Wrekin College and listening to the wealth of stories he has to share.”

Toby Shaw, a governor of Wrekin College and also the chairman of Shropshire County Cricket Club, said he hopes county members would take the chance to attend next Tuesday’s event.

He added: “This is a wonderful opportunity for local people to hear from one of the greatest all-rounders the world has ever known. It would be lovely to see lots of Shropshire CCC members at Wrekin College enjoying listening to Sir Garfield Sobers.”
