Mike and Elliot Jones, of Shrewsbury, took part in the Paramount Road Race on Sunday at Eaton Constantine and came in seventh and fourth place respectively.

Elliot, 18, is a member of the elite Paramount Performance Cycling Racing Team and his father, who owns family-run business Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury, is the Director Sportif.

They competed with fellow team mates Dave Griffiths, who came eighth, Chris Wilkinson, who came 14th, Rich Watson, who came 15th.

“The event was our spring race organised by the club so it was an important race for the team,” said Mike.

“It was 70 mile laps of a lumpy course based around Eaton Constantine and it was very windy so it made the race very hard. I think we averaged around 24 miles an hour.

“69 riders started the race and only 21 finished so it was a really tough race.

“But it was another great day for Paramount. It was a really good start to the season and we had some good results.”

Although Mike, 46, experienced problems with his shoes, having to get a shoe plate tightened by neutral service during the race, he was able to help his son make fourth place.

He said: “It makes me very proud and it’s really nice to race with him. I’m not sure how long it will continue though, as he’s getting better and better and I’m gradually getting worse.

“We’re on different paths and I think they will cross over sometime this year.

“Elliot has had some good race results, with two wins last year and looking for more this year.

Mike, who started racing when he was 14-years-old, said his role in the team is to encourage the younger members and give advice.

As the owner of Stan’s Cycles, he also sponsors the team, providing them with bikes, equipment and expenses.

Mike was a founder member of the Paramount CRT and said he wanted to give the younger team members the chance to get to the top.

He said: “We have always wanted to put something back into racing so it’s my way of helping to involve younger riders.”

Elliot, who started racing at the age of 16, said he was inspired by his father to ride and now very much appreciates his help during races.

“It’s advice while you are on the bike so telling me where to move in the Peloton and to stay out of the wind and it helps on top of my own race experienced.

“I took some risks on Sunday and went for a gamble so I took some solo breaks but it worked in the end. I went out of my comfort zone and it paid off.”

Elliot, who is studying at Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology and works part time at Stan’s Cycles, said he enjoyed racing with his father.

He said: “There were four people including my dad at the front of the race and I broke away and got across to them on my own.

“Then it was myself and my Dad and three others so I thought it must look quite good that a father and son are at the front together.”

Ben Lawrence, managing director of insurance broker Beaumont Lawrence and Co, which sponsors the team, and the racing team manager, said he was delighted with Sunday’s results.

“It just shows we are really on to a good thing with these young riders.

“Creating the elite team within the Paramount Club has already shown brilliant results for the start of the season and with the experience they are building up, the results will only get better.”

The team will be racing next weekend at Malvern for another 70 mile course.
