“I wanted to retain a lot of the young players we had last season,” said Watkins. “That gives us something to build on.

“I’ve had a lot of contact from players interested in coming here, although there are only so many slots available, so I am glad to secure a nucleus and look forward to complementing them with new signings over the coming weeks.”

Two players definitely returning for a second term are netminder Declan Ryan and forward Andy McKinney.

Watkins said: “I was really pleased with Declan throughout the whole of last season. He proved himself more than capable and stole several games for us.

“He has certainly impressed me. What is more he’s a really nice lad, shows lots of potential and definitely has a good future in the game.
And he’s big, fills the net well. These days goalies are physically bigger, and Declan certainly measures up.”

The 18-year-old from Whaley Bridge won praise in his debut season with Tigers, putting in a string of impressive performances and back-stopping his side to wins against top teams like Guildford.

Ryan said: “I had a great year and learned a lot. Tom is a good coach and although things didn’t always go our way we kept our confidence high and backed ourselves to do well. The guys are always motivated to play.

“We were disappointed to miss the play-offs by just one place, so we will be looking to make the play-offs comfortably next year.”

Twenty-year-old Andy McKinney returned for his second stint with Tigers last season and quickly established himself as a fans’
favourite for his dedication and willingness to stick up for team mates whilst also scoring 21 points from 53 games.

“Andy always puts himself on the line for his team, and any coach would be happy with someone like that,” said Watkins. “He will tackle the ugly jobs and is a great character. And he’s still young and learning all the time. He was one of my players of the year, especially for the way he started and ended the season, playing very well.”

McKinney, speaking from Cyprus where he is spending the summer, said:
“I enjoyed last season very much and really liked the atmosphere in the dressing room. I’m looking forward to coming back.”

However one player who will not be in Tigers’ colours in September is the player-coach’s younger brother, Jack Watkins.

Watkins senior said: “Jack is ready to take the next step in his career and I’m sure all Tigers fans will join me in thanking him for his contribution last season and wishing him well for the future.”
