A Government move granting new powers to councils to clamp down on pavement parking has been welcomed by a Shropshire MP following an escalation in complaints from local residents.

Shrewsbury MP Julia Buckley said: “I’m delighted to confirm that Shropshire Council will be granted new powers to enforce against pavement parking, helping keep our paths clear and safe for everyone.

“This comes following a surge of cases here in Shrewsbury, especially around Whitemere Road in Mount Pleasant where rogue pavement parking has caused serious disruption for residents.

“I know that people in other areas of the town such as Belle Vue, Greenfields and Castlefields have also been hugely inconvenienced by pavement parking.

“I’ve been pushing for action. I’ve raised this issue multiple times in Parliament, signed a cross-party letter to the Roads Minister calling for a ban, and in April 2025 I backed an Early Day Motion supporting a nationwide ban on pavement parking.

“I’m delighted the minister has responded to my calls for action and we have secured this new legal power. For far too long residents have been putting up with the nuisance and potential danger of people parking on pavements. Now Shropshire Council will have the powers to deal with it.”
