Shropshire’s two female MPs say they are proud to be part of a project marking the historic moment that has seen women now making up 40 per cent of the membership of the House of Commons.

A nationwide initiative is creating a visual archive of women’s leadership in Parliament today, with portraits captured by women and female‑identifying photographers across the UK.

Shrewsbury MP Julia Buckley (Labour) and North Shropshire MP Helen Morgan (Liberal Democrat) are among those who have been photographed for the archive, specially compiled by the Royal Photographic Society.

Julia Buckley said: “As the first female MP ever elected to represent Shrewsbury, I was proud to take part in the 40% Project.

“This is an excellent project, creating a visual archive of women’s leadership in Parliament today. A huge thank you to photographer Emma Playsted, a talented local Shrewsbury artist specifically selected for this project.”

Helen Morgan MP said: “I’m extremely proud to represent North Shropshire as the constituency’s first female MP. Parliament is still dominated by men – both in the House of Commons and the House of Lords – so it’s great that the contribution of women is being highlighted by the 40% Project.

“Lots of talented photographers are taking part, and it was a pleasure to work with Geraldine Curtis in the beautiful Shropshire countryside.”
