Shrewsbury Town Council has announced a temporary closure of a section of riverside footpath in Shrewsbury to facilitate the removal of six structurally unsound lime trees.

The affected stretch is the Victoria Avenue footpath between Kingsland Bridge and St Julian’s Friars Car Park. It will be completely inaccessible from 8.30 am on Monday, 15 December, until 4 pm on Friday, 19 December 2025.
Safety Concerns over Ageing Lime Trees
The decision follows detailed inspections of the Quarry’s historic Lime Trees, which identified six specimens along Victoria Avenue that must be removed. These trees are suffering from significant internal decay, structural decline, and safety concerns.
Many of the lime trees in this avenue have exceeded their typical 80–100-year lifespan. Their vulnerable location, often subject to floodwater and high-water table conditions, has placed additional stress on the ageing tree stock, accelerating their decline.
Helen Ball, Town Clerk for Shrewsbury Town Council, acknowledged the importance of the trees to the community but stressed the urgency of the works.
“We fully appreciate how important the Quarry’s Lime Trees are to local people and visitors. Unfortunately, our investigations have revealed severe internal decay in several of the trees along Victoria Avenue. These trees now pose a safety risk and must be removed. While it is always regrettable to lose mature trees, carrying out this essential work ensures the safety of the public and supports the continued care of the wider tree population in the Quarry.”
Alternative Route and Future Replacements
The Town Council confirms that the work is vital for maintaining the long-term health of the Quarry’s tree stock. Once the required trees are removed, the Council plans to replace them with new lime trees, which will be planted at more appropriate spacings to support healthier long-term growth.
During the five-day closure, the Victoria Avenue footpath will be entirely inaccessible. If the work is completed ahead of schedule, the path will be reopened earlier. Diversion signage will be clearly in place to direct pedestrians along the recommended alternative route.
The rest of the Quarry will remain open as normal throughout the duration of the works.
Alternative Route: Pedestrians are advised to use Town Walls and reconnect with the Quarry at either Quarry Place or from St Chad’s Terrace.
