The fire, which involved an area of trees and undergrowth measuring approximately 20 by 15 metres, was reported to Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) on Saturday evening at 9.16 pm.

Fire crews from across the county, including Baschurch, Bridgnorth, Newport, Telford Central, and Tweedale, were mobilised to the scene.

Due to challenging access, crews initially struggled to contain the fire, but they returned this morning with more resources at 5.30 am and were able to bring the blaze under control.

A Coordinated Effort

Firefighters used hose reel jets and main jets, supplied by a water bowser, to tackle the fire. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service also deployed a drone to assess the affected areas and used thermal imaging cameras to monitor temperatures for hot spots.

A local farmer and landowners provided crucial assistance with access and resources.

West Midlands Search and Rescue and Telford & Wrekin Council were also in attendance to help alert the public to the ongoing hazards. Visitors to the popular landmark were earlier advised to stay away.

Station Manager Craig Jackson, speaking from the scene, confirmed the fire was under control and issued a warning to the public. “We are urging the public to stay away at present whilst we move equipment up and down the hillside,” he said, highlighting that the main path to The Wrekin is currently being used by emergency vehicles.”

A Reminder to Be Vigilant

Jackson also took the opportunity to remind the public about the dangers of fire during dry spells. “I would also like to warn people about the dangers of having campfires and barbecues whilst we’ve got this dry period, and especially bonfires as well, where it can quickly spread into the countryside,” he added.
