Police and Fire crews spent several hours in the Coalport area on Thursday searching the river following reports of a concern for the safety of a woman seen in the area.

Police were called following a report that a body had been seen in the River Severn.

An intensive search involving Police Officers, a Police helicopter and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was conducted.

Police officers conducted a ground search along the river banks, while the Police helicopter conducted an overhead search, using thermal imaging.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service assisted in the search and also launched a search boat onto the River Severn.

A police spokesman commented: “West Mercia Police can confirm that a body of a woman was found in the Ironbridge area, shortly after 4pm on Thursday. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service recovered a body from the river in the Coalport area. The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and the death is being treated as unexplained.”
