A Shropshire school already ranked in the top five per cent nationally for adding value to a pupil’s education and exam results has now scooped two teaching awards in the prestigious 2015 Good Schools Guide.
Wrekin College in Wellington has won awards for Excellence by boys taking Government and Politics AS Level and by Girls taking Physical Education/Sports Studies AS Level, both at an English Independent School.
It is the latest national accolade for the school which has consistently scored highly in the ALPS (A Level Performance System) which measures a school’s ability to add value to A-Level results compared to what pupils were expected to get based on their GCSE grades.
Headmaster Dr Haydn Griffiths said he was delighted the school was once again being recognised for its excellent teaching standards as he paid tribute to both staff and pupils.
The most recent awards have been presented to Wrekin College by The Good Schools Guide for out-performing all other English schools in its category. The annual awards, which are in their 9th year, are based on a detailed analysis of the most recent examination results, and are designed to highlight consistently good teaching.
“The teaching staff at Wrekin College are committed to ensuring each and every pupil strives to do their very best and that they have the opportunities open to them to study a wide variety of subjects at a very high standard,” added Dr Griffiths.
“We are delighted that this has been recognised by the Good Schools Guide and these awards are a credit to both staff and pupils and how hard they are working to ensure consistently good results daily in the classroom and in key exams. We are very proud of these awards and what they represent and feel sure it will inspire and encourage our pupils as they prepare for their exams.”
Ralph Lucas, Editor of The Good Schools Guide, comments: “Our annual awards scheme is designed to recognise and reward excellence in teaching in every subject area at both GCSE and A Level or equivalent. Our awards give individual teachers and departments where teaching is at its very best the recognition they deserve.”
Teaching at the school was also in the national spotlight after Head of Girls’ Games Caroline Ritchie-Morgan was named the top netball teacher in the UK at the Goalden Globe Awards.
Staff are also gearing up for a busy time as the school hosts its entrance exams next week starting on November 10 with interviews for those aged 16 and over in the week beginning November 16.
