The pensioner was hit in the stomach, doubling up after being winded by the impact. He was on the point of collapse but was helped home by a passer-by.
Police Constable Leanne Rhoden, the investigating officer, said the assault happened at about 10.30pm on Friday in New Park Road, Castlefields.
She appealed for witnesses and information concerning the identities of the offenders.
“The man was walking home and when, a car full of youths passed him outside the Gospel Hall and church. As they went by, they threw a water bomb which hit him causing him to double up but thankfully, he didn’t fall to the ground.
“Although he suffered no lasting injury he was extremely shocked and distressed. He was walking with the aid of a walking stick and the culprits stopped the car a short distance away and were heard laughing.”
PC Rhoden urged anyone with information about the youths to contact Shrewsbury police station on 101. Details can also be given to the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111, or via its website www.crimestoppers-uk.org.”
The car was a small black hatchback, thought to be either a Renault Clio or Vauxhall Corsa.
