Shrewsbury School Celebrates
Shrewsbury School is celebrating a strong year of GCSE results, with a total of 65% of the exams were awarded an A* or A grade and an overall pass rate of 98.2%, substantially higher than the national average.

Three pupils, Daniel Edwards, Sonny Koh, and Alexander Shaw, each gained 10 straight A* grades and a further 25 pupils gained either A* or A grades in all their subjects.

In a remarkable display of mathematical prowess, 63 out of 127 pupils gained A* grades in mathematics – a school record.

Headmaster, Mark Turner, commented that he was delighted with his pupils’ success.

“These excellent results are a vindication of the hard work that our pupils have put in throughout their time at Shrewsbury School and the excellent guidance and support they receive from their teachers. I would specifically like to congratulate the maths department on their record-breaking achievement,” commented Mr Turner.

Outstanding Results for Adcote School
At Adcote School the hard work of pupils and teachers has been rewarded with such an outstanding set of results at GCSE and iGCSE, with 55% of all grades marked at A* or A and with an overall pass rate of 99.6%. Outstanding achievements from our pupils included Emilie Cleary-Sullman with 9 A* and 2 A, Tallulah Brettell with 6 A* and 9 A and Jane Yung with 8 A* 4 A.

Commenting on these wonderful results, Headmaster Gary Wright said “My congratulations to all our pupils – we are all delighted by these superb results on the back of the wonderful A Level results announced last week. Adcote has a deservedly strong reputation for delivering high level academic success in recent years. Our pupils can feel very proud of what they have achieved. We all look forward to welcoming back our high achieving GCSE pupils into our Sixth Form, along with many new pupils joining us next term. The school’s success is reflected in the highest pupil roll in the school’s long history.”

Telford & Wrekin Results Above National Average
The proportion of students who have attained 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or better in the Telford & Wrekin area has risen from the 2012 high, which was well above the national average.

Nearly 90% of students have achieved this figure of 5 passes at C or better, opening doors to a wider range of choices for next year.

Early analysis of results indicate that whilst there is an improvement in results overall, there has been a drop in the proportion of students passing in certain subjects, notably English.

This is affecting the headline figure of 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or better including English and Maths which has dropped by around 3 percentage points across the borough from last year’s high of 61%.

Individual School results that stand out in the borough include Ercall Wood and Burton Borough, celebrating their best ever results.

At Ercall Wood, students are celebrating success with 96% having achieved 5 passes with 79% gaining five or more A*-C and an increase of 5 percentage points for the proportion achieving 5 A*-C including English and Maths – the biggest increase in the borough.

Chay Davis, Headteacher, said “I am so very proud of our pupils and staff. I asked them for one thing, the best results ever, and they delivered.

“Considering the additional emphasis being placed on GCSE examinations, particularly with English and Maths, this is quite an achievement. Congratulations to everyone.”

Burton Borough has continued to hit new highs with 100% of students passing 5 or more GCSEs with 70% of these achieving 5 A* to C including English and Maths.

Councillor Paul Watling, cabinet member for Children, Young People and Families, said: “I would like to congratulate all the students on their achievements and thank everyone connected with the schools for their hard work.”

Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for children’s services, today said:

“Warm congratulations go to pupils on their success. We would also like to thank everyone who is part of our school communities, including teachers and headteachers, and the friends and family of our students, for their valued support and commitment.

“Their achievements are testament to how diligently pupils are prepared for their examinations and the hard work they put into their studies.

“This is such an important time for many young people as they progress from school to further study or the workplace, and I wish all of Shropshire’s students the very best for the future.”
