New speed enforcement site on Sutton Way, Telford

The new site is part of its ongoing Community Concern programme in a bid to bring down the speed of vehicles travelling along the road and will become operational next week.

Concerns were raised about the speed of traffic on Sutton Way by local residents and it was brought to the attention of the Safer Roads Partnership by the local policing team. Speed data was then collected by the partnership which highlighted a compliance problem on the road, with at least six out of ten drivers exceeding the 30mph speed limit and 15% of vehicles travelling above 39.9mph which justified the new site.

Anna Higgins, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership said “The new site on Sutton Way forms part of our Community Concern programme, which responds to community requests for speed enforcement. There was significant concern in the local area about the speed of vehicles travelling along Sutton Way and we hope the presence of a speed camera will improve driver compliance with the 30mph limit and improve the safety of the road for all those who use it.”

The site will launch next week and will be operational for at least six months. Data will be collected during this time to assess the impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Transport and Community Protection, said: “We are committed to responding to the concerns of the community and I hope that motorists will use Sutton Way responsibly and within the speed limit to make it safer to use for everyone.”

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is part of West Mercia Police and works in partnership with nine partner agencies to reduce casualties and make the roads safer for all users in West Mercia through targeted communication, education and training together with enforcement.
