Volunteers help secure Dawley Town Hall’s future

Work started on Friday 3 February where Dawley Regeneration Partnership, community groups and businesses; such as Capgemini and PCB Solicitors were all seen mucking in to tidy up the building and its grounds.

Broken furniture including kitchen units, rubbish and litter was cleared from the site and heavy undergrowth from around the building has been chipped and donated to local allotments to re-use

The Dawley Regeneration Partnership will been looking at various streams of funding to help bring the Town Hall back to life.

In the meantime Dawley Regeneration Partnership, Capgemini, Great Dawley Parish Council and Telford & Wrekin Council have all bought funding to the table to help get
the essential improvements done to this iconic community landmark.

Cllr Frances Bould, Ward Member for Dawley Magna, said: “It has been great to see so many people from different groups and organisations get stuck in to help achieve one common goal, I really enjoyed helping out on the day, the weather was cold but the sun was shining and we all had a great time.

“Scrubbing chairs, tables, and floors and pulling out weeds and pruning overgrown plants can be hard work at the best of times, we managed to get the job done and there was a great sense of achievement for us all.

“It is overwhelming to see how many local people are showing their support to the work that we are doing and I would like to say thank you to everyone who is getting involved in this project.”

Local people have been helping to secure the future of Dawley Town Hall by sharing their memories of old and giving their ideas for the halls future to Dawley Regeneration Partnership. We will be setting up ‘Friends of Dawley Town Hall’ and we’re encouraging local residents to get involved and join the group.

Helen Mitchell, for Capgemini, said: “All of our employees who took part in the Dawley Town Hall Tidy-up had a great day.

“It is really important for us, as one of the biggest employers in Telford and Wrekin, to play an active part in the communities that we operate in.

“Being part of a long term community project is great and it is really heartwarming to talk to local people in Dawley about memories they hold of this historical building.

“Some residents also helped to recycle some of the waste material that we were going to dispose of; for example old wood that could be used for their log burners. Nothing of value was wasted in the tidy up day.”

Cllr Shaun Davies, Cabinet Member for Environment, Co-operative Council * Partnerships, said: “Dawley Town Hall is an early adopters on our journey to becoming a cooperative council. I am delighted that this project is showing cooperative council in action”
