Two killed as plane crashes near Welshpool

The aircraft believed to be seven-seater plane came down at Long Mountain less than a mile from Mid Wales Airport.

The Wales Air Ambulance was called to the crash scene at 12:44pm and confirmed two people were pronounced dead.

Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service all attended the incident.

Chief Inspector Martin Tavener, of Dyfed Powys Police, said police, fire and ambulance emergency services were alerted to the incident around midday.

He said: “This incident involved a light aircraft which has come down on Long Mountain.

“We have now located next of kin and a family liaison officer has been appointed.”

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway by the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB).

Mid Wales Airport, near Welshpool, said they would not comment on the crash but were to remain closed for the rest of the day.
