The work will also result in quicker access to the bus station for bus traffic, straighter traffic lanes through the junction when travelling towards the rail station, and improved traffic signal control to help reduce congestion.

The project is part of the Connect2 scheme in Shrewsbury, which is funded by The Big Lottery and aims to improve pedestrian and cyclist access between the west and north of the town, with a particular focus on Smithfield Road.

Shropshire Council say traffic disruption will be kept to a minimum during the work, with any lane closures on Smithfield Road taking place at night to allow traffic to flow normally during the day. Work is expected to finish by 13 November 2011.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council cabinet member for transport, said:

“Smithfield Road is a major traffic through-route in Shrewsbury, so we are making sure there will be minimal disruption to traffic during the day. Any lane closures on Smithfield Road will take place at night, and we have placed strict conditions on the contractors, Alun Griffiths, to minimise any inconvenience to the public as much as possible. Their staff will be working hard to ensure that local residents and traders are kept well informed throughout the work.”

Shropshire Councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, Andrew Bannerman, added:

“This is an important project for the town, as the current junction layout can be difficult to negotiate by foot and by bike. We want to see more people choose to walk and cycle along Smithfield Road in the future and these improvements are essential in order to achieve this. The work will also tidy up the area, thus creating a good first impression of the town for those arriving by bus.”
