It is understood that nine people were initially trapped in the collision with five people being released prior to Shropshire Fire and Rescue arriving at the scene.
Two children were released by fire service personnel upon their arrival and taken to hospital via air ambulances from Cosford and Staffordshire, three adults were taken by land ambulances.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a lorry and a number of cars which had been involved in a collision.
“They dealt with the occupants of three cars.
“One car carried a woman driver and three children. One of the children, a seven year old girl, had serious injuries. She was anaesthetised and her airway maintained. She was flown to Birmingham Children’s Hospital which had been put on alert for her arrival. Another of the children, a seven year old boy, had leg, facial and abdominal injuries and neck pain. He was flown to the same hospital. The third child in the car was a ‘walking wounded’ casualty and was taken to New Cross Hospital along with the woman driver who had a suspected spinal injury.”
“A man and a woman in a second car were both taken to Princess Royal Hospital as a precaution for suspected spinal injuries.
“Three people in a third car were all assessed and discharged at the scene.”
The motorway is currently closed in both directions between Junctions 3 and 4 with a diversion in operation.
