A limited edition Damien Hirst skull silkscreen print, entitled ‘For The Love Of God’, was stolen at some point after the auction attended by around 800 people had taken place. The print is worth around £2,000.
The theft was discovered shortly after midnight on Thursday.
Police are carrying out a number of enquiries, including checking CCTV. An appeal for information has been made.
A Telford Police spokeswoman said: “The auctioned items were on display on nine trestle tables in the hallway outside the two main function rooms.
“Five members of staff were looking after the tables.
“After the auction, at around midnight, in excess of 800 people left the function rooms. The members of staff were busy looking after the tables and dealing with the successful bidders.
“Some time between 12.10am and 12.20am the limited edition print was stolen.
“Unfortunately due to the high volume of people in the area, no members of staff saw the print being taken.
“Police are investigating the matter and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward.â€
The spokeswoman added: “The print is entitled ‘For The Love Of God’ and depicts a skull covered with diamond dust. It is described as being an eye catching piece by the famous artist Damien Hirst.
“It is a limited edition piece and therefore has a unique number.
“It is highly likely that whoever stole the print may try and sell it on.
“If you are offered the print for sale or are aware of anyone in possession of such an item in recent days, then we would like to hear from you.â€
The print is described as 16 inches by 12 inches.
