Tributes paid to President of the Wenlock Olympian Society

Mr Rogers, who was 79-years-old and lived in south Shropshire died on Saturday. He became president of the society in 2005.

Roy’s career in athletics spanned 52 years, his first major part in an event was as an official at Roger Bannister’s historic four minute mile run in 1954. He also officiated at international athletics events including the Barcelona Olympics and Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Auckland and Manchester.

For eighteen years, Roy was Chairman of Shropshire County Athletic Association. He has travelled the world giving lectures on athletics in such diverse countries as Gibraltar, Zambia and Cuba. 2005 and 2006 saw Roy as President of the Midland
Counties Athletics Association.

Mr Rogers leaves behind his wife, Barbara.
