The programme includes traffic and transport projects, street lighting, bridges and highways structures and also Borough Towns Initiative projects which will improve roads and footpaths.
It also includes investment of more than £500,000 in sign maintenance and road markings, which supports the council’s broader programme of de-cluttering by reducing the number of redundant signs on the highway. This investment follows feedback from residents in 2010 which identified the condition of signs and road markings as an area for further improvement.
Councillor Adrian Lawrence, cabinet member for Environment and Rural, said: “The proposed capital programme aims to build on the work carried out in 2010/11 and will further improve the borough’s highway assets.
“The investment covers wards and parishes across the borough and a number of projects have been developed in partnership with parish and town councils.
“As well as more typical highway and transport schemes, the programme also confirms the investment being made through the Borough Towns Initiative on regeneration schemes.
“This will improve the appearance and condition of footways and roads in the centre of Dawley, Oakengates as well as the Southwater Development.”
“Our maintenance programme includes a range of planned maintenance schemes supporting the Council’s approach of undertaking planned repairs to improve the condition of the highway network, complementing our general pot hole repairs.”
Major planned schemes that are scheduled for 2011/12 as part of the £10m programme include resurfacing works to the roundabout on Hall Park Way near to the access to the Cinema and retail parks (£260,000), resurfacing at the Cock Hotel junction in Wellington (£100,000) and resurfacing on Wombridge Road in Trench (£207,000).
The Council will give advanced notice to all residents and businesses prior to any schemes starting on site, including any traffic management and diversions required for schemes.
Further information on the programme will also be available on the Council’s website from the end of March.
