Council progresses with Woodside regeneration

The regeneration scheme is part of the council’s programme to rejuvenate Telford’s New Town Estates.

Telford & Wrekin Council has agreed a funding package that will enable Wrekin Housing Trust to develop a mixed use scheme in the Woodside local centre, which will include two new shops and 21 houses and flats.

A planning application is due to be submitted shortly by Wrekin Housing Trust and work is expected to start on site by late summer of this year.

This scheme will complete the regeneration of the local centre and will complement the well-used Park Lane Centre as well as the new square and public realm work which was finished in 2010.

Elsewhere on the estate, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Plans Board has granted planning permission for a range of improvements in the Wildwood and Woodrows area in the north of the estate.

These include new parking spaces, new street lighting, road re-surfacing, repairs to garages and various environmental improvements.

The demolition of 40 properties in Wildwood has also been given the go ahead. These properties have been acquired by Telford & Wrekin Council as part of the plans for north Woodside and are adjacent to The Pastures, a new housing site being developed by Bellway Homes.

The Council’s next priority is to secure the future of Rough Park House, the privately-owned, derelict listed building on Woodside Avenue, which has blighted the area for several years.

If the owner has not carried out the necessary repair work in the near future, the Council intends to acquire the property and undertake this work.

Councillor Eric Carter, cabinet member for Housing and Regeneration, said: “We are committed to regenerating historic town centres across the borough and also Telford’s New Town Estates and this is clearly demonstrated by the work that we are doing in Woodside.

“It is all excellent news for the estate and it will be a much more pleasant and enjoyable environment to live in once all the work is completed.

“The work will not just stop at Woodside either. We have already worked with partners to regenerate Madeley, are currently working on schemes for Sutton Hill and have future plans for Brookside as well.”
