The 18-year-old, was serving a 20 month sentence for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and theft.
He was found hanging in his cell on Monday evening and taken to hospital were he was later pronounced dead.
A Prison Service spokesman said: “At 8.50pm on Monday, Michael Cartwright was found hanging in his cell. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead at 12.35pm on Wednesday.â€
An investigation is set to be launched by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.
