Armistice Day marked in Shropshire

Thousands of people took part in a two-minute silence held in towns and villages across the county at 11am.

At RAF Shawbury, personnel attended a service of remembrance in one of the unit’s hangars. The service was led by Station Padre, Flight Lieutenant Chris Lawrence.

In Shrewsbury, Shropshire Council staff and councillors gatherd in the centre quadrangle at Shirehall. In particular they commemorated local government staff who died during the two world wars. Councillor Malcolm Pate, Chairman of Shropshire Council, laid a wreath on the memorial stones which commemorate them.

A two minutes silence was also held at the new Remembrance Memorial, located in Telford Town Park.

The Remembrance Memorial was dedicated as part of the Freedom of Borough event in May, which honoured the Rifles Regiment. Recently a new plinth in Kilkenny Blue limestone has been installed and the continuing project will also see the addition of benches and ambient lighting – essential features to create a quiet place for reflection and remembrance.

Councillor Stephen Bentley, cabinet member for Active Lifestyles, Leisure and Culture, said: “I am pleased that this memorial has created such interest within the community with the Memorial Stone and Cast Poppy seen as traditional tributes to all those have been affected in any way by conflicts or disasters at home and abroad.”

Acts of remembrance and services will also be held across the county this coming Sunday.
