Telford College lecturer Ian Millington will be among more than 30,000 ‘distinguished gentlemen’ taking to the roads next weekend for a charity motorbike fundraising campaign.
The Electrical Installations tutor will be donning his posh togs next Sunday 27 September and hopping aboard a classic Triumph motorbike for ‘The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride’.
The global fundraising event is being hosted in more than 400 towns and cities around the world, to raise funds for research into prostate cancer.
Ian, who works at TCAT’s Wellington campus, is travelling to north Wales, to take part in the leg from Rhyl to Conwy.
He said: “Why am I doing this? Because over 1,300 men a day die of prostate cancer worldwide, and that’s something we aim to stop.
“The aim of The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is to reach its goal of three million dollars to fund research into a cure for a disease that claims far too many gentlemen each and every year.
“I will be sporting some rather dapper clothing and riding a classic Triumph, along with other gentlefolk, across the North Wales coast – stopping for tea on the way to chat to no doubt bemused onlookers!”
It is the second year that Ian has taken part in the campaign. Last year, he rode a Classic Triumph Bonneville, wearing a full black-tie outfit.
“This year, my outfit is a little more outstanding rather than distinguished! But again I will be riding a classic Triumph. It’s not about the distance, but making people aware of the prostate cancer fundraising issue.”
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in 2012 in Sydney, Australia, inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit.
Last year, more than 20,000 people took part, spread across 58 countries, raising over 1.5 million dollars. Organisers are hoping to double that total this year.
