The charity is hoping that this year’s nationwide event will be the biggest ever with thousands of coffee mornings taking place across the country on the same day.

The first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then it has raised over £75 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Stan’s Cycles in Shrewsbury will be holding its first ever Macmillan Coffee Morning. Shoppers and visitors to the town are invited to head over to the shop in Wyle Cop between 10am and 12pm on Friday, where they can take part in the charity’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning by enjoying a range of homemade cakes at the in-house coffee shop.

Mike Jones, managing director of Stan’s Cycles, said having the coffee shop within the store gave them a perfect venue for the charity coffee morning.

“Cancer is something that will affect everyone at some point in their life, whether directly or through loved ones, colleagues or friends,” he said.

“Our coffee shop here at Stan’s Cycles gives us the perfect venue to take part in the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee morning.

“We will be delighted to welcome anyone who wants to come along for some of our homemade cakes and a hot drink, with our in-house baking expert Wendy Jones already preparing for a baking marathon ahead of the event.”

Staff and students at Walford and North Shropshire College (WNSC) held their coffee morning on Tuesday when a total of £181 was raised. The event was organised by Sharon Cooper, Head of Commercial Services at the College. Students from WNSC’s Scholars Restaurant and Visage Hair and Beauty Salon assisted in raising money by baking cakes, performing treatments and staffing stalls.

Sharon commented “This is one of our annual events; we always raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s great to see all the students getting involved. We didn’t want to just offer coffee and cake, we wanted to also offer a range of things for people to spend their money on! Today we have a raffle, tombola, coffee and cakes, nail and hair treatments and we hope to raise lots of money for the very worthy charity.”
