Year 7 and 8 pupils at Wrekin College selected the Bickerstaff Unit at PRH as their chosen charity for last school year. Their teacher, Sally Mostyn, had reason to be very grateful to the Unit as her husband Jim’s cancer was detected here and from that detection successfully treated.
Jim is the Director of Sport at the College.
Consultant Dr Gill Townson received the cheque on behalf of the hospital from her own daughters Ella and Holly. Ella was part of the Year 7 and 8 team which raised the money.
The pupils held a fair at the end of the Lent term, selling cake to hordes of fellow pupils who queued three-deep to make their selection. They also had stalls ranging from egg throwing and ‘splat the rat’ to ‘guess the number of sweets in the jar’.
On the final day of the summer term, pupils finished off with an al fresco sweet stall, bringing the total raised to just under £1,000, which far exceeded their expectations.
Mrs Mostyn said: “It is wonderful the way the pupils responded to my request that we raise money for the unit and it was especially significant that Ella was a pupil in the team.”
Dr Townson said: “We are very grateful to the pupils for their wonderful efforts. The money will be used to fund educational activities for staff within the department.”
