Liam Bremner, a Waiting List Clerk at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, will take part in the Three Peaks Challenge, Tough Mudder Midlands, a cycle ride from Telford to Big Ben, the Super Spartan Race – described as an “eight mile, 20 obstacle battlefield” and the daunting Man Vs Mountain.
Liam, 20, who works at the Treatment Centre at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, will take on each of the challenges with friend Lewis Phillips, 22. Their friends Warren Robinson, 21 and Ben Parker, 22, will each take part in some of the events.
The first event, the Three Peaks Challenge which will see the friends take on the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, will take place on Saturday (5 July). They will have just 24 hours to reach the summits of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon.
The friends – all from Telford – are hoping to raise more than £1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK by the end of the five events.
Liam said: “We have been training for all of the events, not just focussing on the first one. We have done a lot of training on the Wrekin, which is ideal for the Three Peaks and the Man vs Mountain.
“There has also been a lot of going to the gym, doing circuits and biking.
“We train together as much as we can – at least once in the week – and then at the weekend we do a longer session.”
The friends chose to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK because it is one of the biggest killers in men, claiming 10,000 lives every year.
Their decision was given added poignancy when the grandfather of another of their friends was diagnosed with the disease.
Liam said: “Originally we were just going to so a mud run in Weston Park, but the places had all gone so we decided to do something a lot bigger.
“It is taking up most of the summer. I am having one week’s holiday but even then I will be doing as much training as I can.
“We are all quite fit lads, but it will still be a really challenge.
“I am looking forward to the Tough Mudder myself, because it will be good fun. The bike ride to London is the one I am dreading the most. I’m not really a cyclist and I suspect that will be tough.
“We’re hoping to raise £300 on our JustGiving page before the first event. Lewis has said he will shave his head if we do. We’re thinking of doing little challenges like that for certain fundraising targets to give it a bit extra.”
The team members have put a lot of their own money into taking on the challenges, but have also been sponsored by Central Paving in Telford. The firm has paid for the entry fee for one of the events, T-shirts and for the rental car that is being used for the Three Peaks Challenge.
The events are:
• The 3 Peak Challenge on Saturday, 5 July
• Tough Mudder Midlands on Saturday, 12 July
• 12-hour Telford to Big Ben Cycle Ride (160mile) on Saturday, 23 August
• The Super Spartan Race on Sunday, 31 August
• Man Vs Mountain on Satuday, September 6
