The poppies were provided by Shrewsbury Town Council, which is coordinating a series of commemorative events recognition and remembrance of the outbreak of war in 1914.

Councillor Ioan Jones, who is leading the commemoration committee, visited children from Orchard Class at the Grange Primary School to see how they were getting on with their designs.

Councillor Jones said: “The poppy is a powerful symbol of remembrance and this is a wonderful example of how a local community initiative can help shape our national commemorations. I hope that the youngsters from Orchard Class enjoyed decorating their poppies as much as I did seeing all their wonderful efforts and that it provides them with a vibrant connection between past and present generations.”

Several schools have decorated poppies, all of which will now be collected so that they may form part of the Flanders bed display in the Dingle gardens.

The display will be officially dedicated on August 2 as part of an event, led by the Mayor of Shrewsbury, in the Quarry.

Members of the public are encouraged to join invited guests and dignitaries from 11.30am at the Bandstand for a short commemoration of readings and music to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.
