Digital Photography for Beginners is a 4-week course presented by professional photographer and tutor Richard Franklin. These popular courses are for people who are keen to conquer their fears of dealing with the new technology and to learn how to produce great photographs.
The course begins with the basics – how to format memory cards, setting the time and date, choosing appropriate exposure modes, image file formats and the purpose of ISO.
As the course progresses, focusing techniques, shutter speed and aperture control are covered, along with tips and techniques on good photographic composition.
Richard delivers each session with the use of PowerPoint slides and practical demonstrations. Participants are expected to bring their own cameras along, as they will complete tasks around Shrewsbury town centre with the results being discussed in class.
Digital cameras have so many automatic and semi-automatic modes and Richard insists that it is important to know what is happening inside the camera when these various modes are selected, helping to prevent unsatisfactory results. For example, many people that have taken photographs of a night scene have grabbed their camera, used a suitable exposure mode but were unaware that the shutter speed was far too slow to hold it steady by hand, resulting in blurred pictures. This, and other pitfalls are clearly explained by Richard with plenty of examples being made available.
