Mount Kilimanjaro climb for Breakthrough Breast CancerFour local girls are in training for a challenge of a lifetime and have spent months raising money for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Campaign.

Amy Broster, Pippa Card, Heidi Andrew and Marie Fraser all from Shrewsbury plan on climbing the largest free standing mountain in the world in February 2011 and at 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the largest volcanoes ever to break through the earth’s crust.

Their challenge is to reach the summit.

They are supporting the Breast Cancer Campaign whose aim is to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure.

Amy who works for Turnbull Garrard Solicitors is determined to make a difference, she said “I hear of so many that are suffering from this cruel disease. My three other companions and I want to raise as much money as possible to help all those families out there who have to go through this day after day and with money being raised all the time, the extra little bit we raise might be the final amount to find a cure.”

In the UK, breast cancer is the most common cancer and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women and every year over 45,500 women will be diagnosed with the cancer.

Amy’s Aunt is currently battling the disease “Eight years ago, my Auntie was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to go through an intense course of both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but battled through all the gruelling treatment and beat the disease.”

Sadly, our worse fears came about for my aunt in March, the cancer had returned with secondaries and my aunt has started chemotherapy for the second time but been told she will never be cured of the disease.

Amy wanted to do something to raise money and make a difference to families who have also been affected. The challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was decided upon and soon Amy had recruited three friends to take part.

Pippa Card an Office Manager at Donald Insall Associates Architects, also has a personal reason for taking part “This has to be without a doubt my biggest challenge yet! I have such a big incentive which is to help raise lots and lots of money for the Breast Cancer Campaign.

I have unfortunately cried many tears, since my Dad passed away from prostate cancer and I couldn’t even begin to explain how that felt. I know he would be extremely proud of us. I want to do this climb to support Amy in raising as much money as possible for the Campaign to help find a cure for this cruel disease.”

The girls have spent months raising money with Charity quiz nights,  BMW Charity Ball night, A Hog Roast, Market Stalls and a Crosstrainer Marathon to name just a few and have set their target at £25,000 which is now in their grasp.

shropshirelive.com would like to wish all the girls the very best of luck in this amazing challenge of a lifetime and hope they can raise lots of money for this very worthy charity
