Applications are now open for Pentabus Local Young Writers, a transformative six-month scriptwriting course designed for aspiring playwrights aged 18–30.

Running from February to July 2026, this part-time programme offers a blend of online and in-person sessions at Ludlow Assembly Rooms, ensuring accessibility for participants across the region.
This free, sector-leading course invites successful applicants to immerse themselves in the craft of playwriting, guided by experienced writers, award-winning directors and the Pentabus team. During the programme, participants will develop their skills, hone their creative voices, and write their own original short play.
At the end of the course, each play is staged by a professional cast and creative team as part of the Pentabus Young Writers Festival 2026. For emerging writers, this is not just a course – it’s a launchpad into the professional theatre world.
Former Pentabus Young Writers have gone on to full commissions from the company and Olivier Award nominations. Recent Pentabus Young Writers groups have been led by Bruntwood Prize winning Tim Foley, Papatango Prize winning Laura Waldren, Oliver nominated Liv Hennessy, Off West End Award winning Tom Powell, and Florence Espuet-Nickless, who has been commissioned by National Theatre and BBC Radio 4.
“For over 50 years, Pentabus has championed rural voices and new talent. The Local Young Writers programme is about giving young people the tools, confidence and platform to tell their stories – and to see those stories brought to life on stage. It’s quick to apply, and we can’t wait to read all applications!”, commented Joanna Freeman, Pentabus Head of Engagement.
Applicants do not need to have any playwriting experience, just a curiosity about writing for stage.
Full application details available at pentabus.co.uk/local-young-writers. The deadline to apply is 9am on Monday 5th January 2026. For an informal conversation about the programme, contact Joanna Freeman, Head of Engagement, on joanna@pentabus.co.uk.
