Shrewsbury Carnival set for great year

Local businesses and groups are being invited to take part in the annual event on Saturday 16 June by organising a float for the town centre procession or having a stall in Shrewsbury’s Quarry Park.

The organisers want to attract more community involvement, especially from younger people. A youth action group has been set up with the first meeting taking place at 7pm on Tuesday 24th April at the Darwin Community Centre in Frankwell.

They are appealing for musicians, bands and choirs, committee planners, float entrants and other volunteers who can help out on the day.

The theme for the event is British Heroes: The Best of British.

A bakeoff competition is also being organised as part of the new carnival Vinatge Tearoom.

Judging will take place in the Quarry Park on the day with guest judges BBC Radio Shropshire presenter Vicki Archer, current Shrewsbury Mayoress Tricia Durnell and Chris Conde, Head Chef at the Inn on Ginshill who took part in BBC’s Masterchef: The Professionals.

Julia Wenlock from Shrewsbury Carnival said:

“It’s great so many people want to get involved, it’s going to be another fantastic year with events taking place all day in the Quarry Park and our town centre procession at 2pm.”

“The theme for the event is British Heroes: The Best of British. We chose the theme to reflect the Olympics being in London and The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

“We have a number of local bands playing on our main stage along with entertaining acts in the main arena.

“The Quarry will also be full of stalls and charity stands including a fun fair for all the family.”
