Architecture and planning practice Hughes Architects is expanding into Shropshire with a new office on Wyle Cop in Shrewsbury town centre.

The firm, which has offices in Newtown and Welshpool, Powys, has taken space at number 11 and expects to open within the next two months, strengthening its work across both Mid Wales and Shropshire.
The move follows a rise in demand for specialist architectural services in Shropshire, particularly in heritage and conservation projects. Shrewsbury’s historic townscape and the wider area’s significant number of listed buildings and Conservation Areas have driven an increased need for expert advice on sensitive refurbishments and redevelopment.
“Our work in Shropshire has grown considerably, so establishing a base in Shrewsbury is a natural step,” said Doug Hughes, Principal Architect and Managing Director. “It is a town with an incredible architectural heritage. We want to support local homeowners, developers and organisations to protect that history while delivering well-designed spaces that meet modern needs.”
Hughes Architects will offer its full range of services from the new office, including domestic extensions and new homes, commercial developments, and housing schemes for private and public sector clients. This includes planning consultancy and early-stage feasibility work through to design, project management and delivery.
The practice has built a strong reputation for Conservation Architecture, working on sensitive schemes involving listed buildings and historic sites. It also brings significant expertise in sustainable design and construction, from low-energy retrofitting and renewable technologies such as heat pumps to Passivhaus-inspired approaches for new-build projects.
Richard Lewis, Architect and Director, said the new office will improve access for clients and partners across the county.
“Being based in the town centre gives us a stronger local presence and the ability to work even more closely with communities, contractors and planning authorities,” he said. “We are looking forward to contributing to Shrewsbury’s future growth while respecting the qualities that make it such a special place.”
Hughes Architects currently operates studios in Newtown and Welshpool. The Shrewsbury office marks the next phase of its planned growth across the region where it will also expand its team.
