Gareth Connell and Maz Bedson have run Purity Health and Fitness at their studio in Wellington since August, 2009, and aim to encourage people who might be put off joining a conventional gym to get fit.

To celebrate, the pair has also commissioned a special cake, made by Mr Connell’s finance Vikki Burnell, of Made with Love, a celebration cake company based in Telford. The cake is iced with all sorts of words representing the business, such as ‘massage therapy’ and ‘health assessments.’

And it’s not the only three tier cake the pair will be enjoying as they are soon to get married on September 7 at Buckatree Hotel in Shropshire.

“We know cake isn’t the best thing to eat when you’re trying to get in shape,” Mr Connell said. “But if you can’t have cake for a birthday party, when can you?”

As part of the celebrations, the studio, based at the Wrekin Professional Health Centre on Holyhead Road, will see new equipment, such as a spin bike and a much wider variety of weights.

Gareth, who has been working in fitness, personal training and practicing as a massage therapist for just over 10 years, said he wanted to thank his clients for all their support over the last four years.

He said: “We wanted to invest in new equipment to show our appreciation to our clients and show we care about the quality of the equipment we use.

“In October, we will be expanding the size of the studio by moving into the room next door so that will give our clients a lot more space to train.

“I’ve enjoyed all the work we’ve done with our clients. It’s really satisfying to be able to help people achieve their fitness goals.

“With us, there’s no pressure and nobody watching. It’s an opportunity to try new exercises without being nervous. It’s one-to-one so it’s very unique.”

For Maz, it is the clients which make the job so worthwhile.

“I enjoy helping to mend broken people,” she said. “In the four years that we’ve been in business, we’ve noticed that many people are afraid of training in a conventional gym.

“We work with a wide range of people, many who suffer from health problems, to help their achieve their personal goals.

“We treat every client as individuals and discuss very carefully what they need to do to achieve their fitness goal – and that is a very personal thing.”

Maz, who has a sporting background in judo, hockey and skiing, said the business has come along way in four years.

“We have a lot of regular clients that come to use and that’s great.

“A lot of people that come to us have got weight problems, fitness problems or are recovering from a health issue or trying to manage an on going health issue.

“Sometimes we get people that come to us that are very broken with low self-esteem and they just do not know where to go next. We help them get out of that hole and I love that side of our work.”
