The photographs of the Stiperstones and The Quarry in Shrewsbury were taken by photographer Malcolm Glover over the summer.
The images, which are almost 15ft long, were unveiled in the corridor which runs past the Surgical Assessment Unit and Surgical Short Stay at a small reception to celebrate the completion of the work.
Malcolm was commissioned to take the photographs in a project which was funded through an Arts Council grant, with additional funding from The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust Charity.
The project was led by the Trust and Creative Health CIC, which manages West Midlands Arts Health & Wellbeing, the regional network dedicated to supporting arts and health work. The commission was overseen by a task and finish group which included members of staff, volunteers and members of the public.
Adrian Osborne, Communications Director at the Trust, said: “We’re delighted with the finished pieces of work, which were shaped by the views of patients, staff and members of the public over the summer. Malcolm’s images of both town and country reflect the diversity of the area we serve.
“The striking image of the Stiperstones is particularly poignant as it represents an ever changing atmosphere, in an iconic setting which has views across the area from where our patients come. The Quarry image embodies that spirit of fun and family through the generations that so many of us associate with this natural amphitheatre overlooking the River Severn.
“We hope this will just be the start of an exciting journey to introduce more art into our hospitals for the benefit of our patients, staff and visitors.”
The unveiling was attended by members of the task and finish group, members of the Trust Board, and other invited guests. It featured classical music performed by Manchester-based musicians Trio Volant in the Reception of the Treatment Centre. The trio then performed for patients in the Therapy Gym on Ward 22S/R.
The project is part of the Trust’s SaTH Arts programme to introduce more art at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, as art can have a really positive impact on the experiences of patients, visitors and staff.
Earlier this year four large eye-catching images of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site were installed at the Princess Royal Hospital. The four large pictures are reproductions of images from the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust’s collection and have replaced pictures that were formerly on display on the main ground floor and first floor corridors at the hospital since it opened in 1989.
The striking new images were chosen in a competition run by The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust and the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and were installed in May.
A community exhibition ran alongside Malcolm’s commission and people are still able to submit photographs of their favourite locations in Shropshire for an online gallery. Some of these images will also be printed for display at the RSH.
