
The regiment, first formed in 1755 and known then as the 53rd (Shropshire) regiment, served in such places as North America, India, Afghanistan, Eastern Sudan and Korea.
David Wright MP said: “The Shropshire Light Infantry fought bravely in many places across the globe over a number of centuries and I was honoured to be asked to support the efforts to raise money for a national memorial.
“Plans have been drawn up for the memorial at Alrewas and, having visited the site last week, it is a humbling experience and an extremely worthwhile cause.
