The new limited-edition beer has been created by Wood’s of Wistanstow, south Shropshire.
“We’ve designed Golden Goal to be a light ale with something of a lager character,” said brewery MD Edward Wood. “We’re all football fans here so we thought the World Cup, with its pure gold trophy, was a great occasion to brew a special edition beer for, especially if England can do well.”
Wood’s Sales Manager James Owens was on the books at Shrewsbury Town as a junior and has played football at county level. Edward and accountant Colin James are lifelong Shrewsbury supporters. Colin and sales executive Nick Phillips have played for numerous Shropshire clubs and Nick has also represented Shropshire. The brewery itself is a long-time backer of Shrewsbury Town through pitch-side hoardings and match programme adverts.
“We’re really looking forward to a festival of football with the World Cup and we hope England are there for a long time,” said Edward.
Golden Goal will be on draught at selected pubs and free houses in Shropshire, the West Midlands and Central Wales. They include the Abbey and Prince of Wales Shrewsbury, Cock Hotel and Raven Wellington, Duke’s Head Leominster, Huntsman Little Wenlock, Danery Quatt, Malt Shovel Highley, Jack Mytton Oswestry and Horse and Jockey Grindley Brook, Whitchurch.
