Last year’s clash between Shropshire and a star-studded Invitation XI may have been a total wash out, but the day still proved a resounding success with hundreds of guests enjoying the hospitality on offer in a marquee on the edge of the boundary.
The response to this year’s event has again been excellent, much to the delight of the county chairman.
“It’s been phenomenal,” said Mr Shaw. “This event is always so well supported and for the county’s business community it has really become the premier event for the summer.
“We will have 630 guests joining us in the marquee and that’s down to the reputation this day now enjoys and also a reflection of how well we are doing on the pitch this season.
“Roger Dakin, a former England hockey international, will be giving a talk and we’ll also have a draw with some great prizes on offer including a trip to Paris and a chance to win your own firework display.”
But pride of place, of course, will go to the cricket with Shropshire taking on a guest XI put together by county captain Richard Oliver.
The teams will play two Twenty20 matches with the scores from both added together to determine the winners.
Fantastic setting
“It’s a real showpiece event and after what happened with the weather last year we’re hoping for much better this time,” added the chairman. “The forecast is good so we’re really looking forward to it.
“Wrekin College has had a new square laid and it’s a fantastic setting.”
Shropshire skipper Oliver is pleased with the quality included in both sides with the home team boosted by the return to county colours of Shropshire stalwart Mark Downes.
Promising Oswestry youngsters Charlie Morris and Robbie Clarke are also named in a 12-man squad.
The invitation XI will feature a number of Minor Counties cricketers and talented overseas professionals currently playing club cricket in England.
“This is always a day to look forward to,” said Oliver. “It will be a nice occasion and it’s always good to play in front of a crowd of 700 to 800 people.
“It’s an opportunity for the young lads in our team to perform against players who have been there and done it, players that have played first class cricket and in the Indian Premier League.
“This game is a lot of fun to play in and there will be a friendly rivalry between the sides.”
The first ResourceBank Challenge ball will be bowled at Wrekin College at 11am on Thursday with spectators very welcome to come along to enjoy the cricket with admission free.
