Outbreaks of snow will continue heavy at first with possible disruption, but tending to ease slightly as the day progresses. It will remain very cold with strong easterly winds bringing a risk of blizzards and drifting, especially over high ground. The top temperature for today is 0C although with the wind chill forecasters say it will feel more like -10C.
The snow will fall lighter and patchier this evening, although it will continue through the night with further drifting possible as strong easterly winds are maintained. A widespread frost will develop with an overnight low of -4C.
Tomorrow will see a cloudy start with further light and patchy snow, but it should become mostly dry during the afternoon.
Snow Causes Disruption
Today’s Shrewsbury V Oldham match is off following an early assessment of the pitch at the Greenhous Meadow. The referee made an assessment of the conditions and deemed that with the forecast for more snow and poor local conditions the game had to be called off.
Motorists are also facing difficult driving conditions across the county.
Vicki Bristow, Communications Manager for the Safer Roads Partnership said: “If you do need to travel take extra care on the roads and ensure your vehicle is in good running order before you leave. Vehicle handling can change considerably and it takes much longer to slow down on icy and slippery roads. Reduce your speed, keep well back from the vehicle in front and allow plenty of time to slow down. Steering may become unresponsive and if this happens, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually. Braking sharply on an icy or wet road will only make the situation worse and could cause the brakes to lock and the car to skid.”
Will Lang, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said: “While it is not unusual to see snow in March, the cold weather we have seen has been quite prolonged.
“As always, we are working with different agencies to help keep Britain on the move, and to keep people safe and well. However, people should be prepared for further disruption as we head through the next few days.”
