A red vehicle is believed to have driven into the main entrance doors of SpArC in Brampton Road at about 4.30am on Thursday, causing significant damage and potentially leaving the building structurally unsafe.
The incident is being treated as a burglary although nothing is believed to have been stolen at this stage.
Police Constable Chris Young, who is investigating the incident, said forensic evidence left at the scene was being examined and leads police to believe a vehicle was used to force the glass doors.
“I would urge who has seen or heard anything which might be connected to this incident or has seen a red vehicle in the area during the relevant time to contact police on 101,” he said.
“The doors being smashed in would have made a lot of noise and it is likely that this vehicle suffered a fair amount of damage after being used to ram the doors.
“I am also keen to hear from anyone who might know of a friend, neighbour or family member with a damaged red vehicle or has seen or been asked to repair damage to a such a vehicle since the early hours of Thursday morning.”
The cost of repairs to the centre is not known at this stage and structural engineers are due to attend to assess the damage.
