Kirsty James and Becca Paulett, who work at the Toni & Guy salon in Shrewsbury, beat off entrants from around 150 shops across the north of England to gain their places at the grand final of the ‘assistant of the year’ contest.
Becca, 19, of Bomere Heath, was winner in the first year assistant category and Kirsty, 20, of Shrewsbury, came runner up as a second year assistant.
They will be travelling to London on September 2 in an attempt to lift the national Toni & Guy title and their boss at the Castle Street salon Gavin Pulham wished them luck.
He commented: “They are really talented young hairdressers who deserve to do really well in the national event. We wish them every success.
“Entering into competitions and awards is all part of our strong commitment to investing in the careers of local people and in the local economy.
“Since moving into the town 12 years ago we have trained over 30 youngsters, most of whom are still with us and six of whom now own and run their own successful salons. All are highly qualified with diplomas and awards in every aspect of our trade.
“Hundreds of young people have also been on work experience placements with us, giving them a valuable insight in our industry, and many of whom we have gone on to employ.â€
