The 76-year-old received multiple injuries in the collision which happened shortly before 3.30pm yesterday in Mickley Lane, near Tern Hill.

She was airlifted to the City General Hospital at Stoke where she was certified dead soon after arrival.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances and appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Investigating officer, PC Rob Seager, said: “The lady was in collision with a black coloured Ford Galaxy MPV which was travelling along Mickley Lane from the direction of Fauls Green towards the Hodnet by-pass.

“It’s thought she may have been mowing a roadside lawn at the time. We are anxious to hear from anyone who saw anything which might assist the police investigation into this tragedy.

“In particular, we are appealing for the driver of a white vehicle, possibly a van, which was travelling from the direction of Hodnet by-pass along Mickley Lane towards the village of Fauls Green and would have passed the black Ford Galaxy seconds before the collision.

“If you can assist, please contact Market Drayton or Shrewsbury police stations on 0300 333 3000.”

The car driver, a man in his fifties, was unhurt.

The Shropshire coroner Mr John Ellery has been informed and an inquest will be opened in due course.

The road was closed and diversions set up while the emergency services worked at the scene.
