Telford Tigers celebrate weekend victories

A 4-1 win over Basingstoke Bison on Saturday, and a 2-0 victory at home to Milton Keynes on Sunday, capped a remarkable turnaround in form.

Encouraging performances in recent weeks have seen Telford deliver scares to EPL high-fliers Slough Jets and Manchester Phoenix.

Those matches ultimately ended in defeat, but a new-found confidence within the Tigers ranks is now paying dividends.

Watkins said: “Maybe the pressure is off us a bit and the guys have definitely started to believe in themselves more.

“Just after Christmas, there was still talk of the play-offs, and maybe for a young team that took its toll.

“But now the pressure is off, the guys are enjoying their hockey. Our home form is really strong and we have outshot a lot of teams.

“To play with the young guys we have and to have picked up these wins this weekend really makes me proud.”

It was Telford’s first four-point weekend of the season, with Sunday’s win over Milton Keynes their first in two years – as well as being their first-ever shut-out.

Scott McKenzie, Callum Bowley, Luke Brittle and Jurak Senko were on target against Basingstoke on Saturday night.

Brittle struck in the third period against Milton Keynes, with the match having been stuck at 0-0 for over 40 minutes.

He then sealed the points with an empty net goal just moments from time.

Watkins added: “We have got four games left in the season and it always feels better after winning a couple.

“It would have been easy for our guys to give up weeks ago, but they are young and will want to prove themselves.

“They will want to move onto bigger and better things, and they have got to keep putting themselves in the shop window.

“If they keep performing and working hard they will do that.”

Milton Keynes player-coach Nick Poole, meanwhile, believes his side’s schedule of three games in as many nights took its toll against Telford.

He said: “Telford played really well and you could see they were up for the win. I am a bit disappointed in the way we played.

“The the first two periods we played well enough, but in the third we just ran out of gas.

“But it is certainly not an excuse and all credit for Telford. They deserved the win.”

Telford’s penultimate set of games next weekend sees them face Slough Jets at home and away.
