Telford & Wrekin Council community fund to improve wards

Your Money, Your Projects has made a pot of £1,000 available each of the council’s 54 elected councillors to put forward proposals for the money to be spent on improving their individual ward for residents.

So far, the fund has helped a range of projects across the borough, benefitting local.groups and residents of all ages.

A number of the proposed schemes have a landscaping theme as councillors use the available funds to improve the environment in their wards. These include:

– Cherry trees at two locations in Madeley including the corner of Halesfield/Kemberton Road and the Maddocks.

– Funding for Lilleshall & Muxton Allotment Society to buy new notice board and bench. This is a joint proposal from Church Aston and Lilleshall wards.

– A flower bed in Newport to commemorate both the Queen’s reign of 60 years and the Olympics. This is part of Newport’s Britain In Bloom bid and is supported by all four Newport wards.

– Money to support the Telford Access to Nature project between Shropshire Wildlife Trust and the Friends of Apley Wood, ensuring additional events will be held during summer and autumn 2012.

– Assistance with the development and associated costs of the Wrekin Trundle in Horsehay and Lightmoor ward.

– Paying for seeds and equipment at the Alexander Fleming School community garden to help pupils planting and harvesting in the Madeley Community Orchard.

– Repairs to bridge and footpaths at Castle Pools in Dawley Magna ward.

– Materials and equipment for the Charlton School eco garden, which has been matched funded by Wellington Town Council.

– Contribution towards the running costs of the Brookside Improvement Group.

– Creation and installation of a bench using locally sourced oak for the Brookside Community Garden.

– A planting scheme in conjunction Church Aston Parish Council and Church Aston Infants School, creating a nature area and space for community events

Councillor Shaun Davies, cabinet member for Co-operative Council, Environment and Partnerships, said: “One of the things that has really stood out since we launched Your Money, Your Projects is the diverse range of ideas that elected members have come up with to improve their wards.

“I am delighted that councillors from all parties have applied for funding and the various projects aimed at improving environments, creating gardens and flower beds and repairing infrastructure will all help make Telford and Wrekin an even better place to live.”

Madeley ward Councillor Gill Green said: “Eight flowering cherry trees were planted in Madeley in mid February, including four at Maddocks and four at Halesfield Road.

“These will complement the spring bulb planting scheme and hopefully create two small avenues of tress for residents to enjoy for years to come.”
