Commuters and tourists in Bridgnorth face disruption as the historic Cliff Railway has been forced to suspend all services for over a month.

The closure, which commenced today, Tuesday 6 January, follows urgent notification from Severn Trent Water regarding essential infrastructure repairs.

The water company has confirmed that Stoneway Passage, the narrow thoroughfare providing the sole access to the railway’s bottom station, must be closed to allow for extensive sewer repairs.

In a statement, representatives for the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway explained that they had no choice but to halt operations. Because Stoneway Passage is the only way for passengers to reach the lower terminus, the railway is effectively cut off from the public.

The works are expected to last approximately five weeks, meaning the iconic funicular—a staple of the Shropshire town since 1892 is unlikely to return to service until mid-February.
