Nearly 60 residents from across the county town gathered last week for a cherished local tradition, as the Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club hosted its annual Christmas Carol Service and Afternoon Tea.

The event, held at the Barnabas Church in Longden Coleham, has been a staple of the local festive calendar for over a decade. This year’s gathering proved to be as popular as ever, with the eldest guest in attendance aged 96.
A Traditional Celebration
The afternoon commenced with a heartwarming carol service featuring six classic carols and four festive readings. The congregation was officially welcomed by Pastor David Mathias and the Shrewsbury Severn Rotary President, Johnathan Callwood.
Tea, Tunes, and a Special Visitor
Following the service, guests were treated to a “tasty tea” served by a dedicated team of volunteers. The festive atmosphere continued with live entertainment provided by a group of local musicians, culminating in a surprise appearance from Father Christmas himself.
John Yeomans, the organiser of the Rotary Christmas tea party, expressed his gratitude to the community members who made the day possible.
“My grateful thanks to all involved in helping to make this much-loved event such a great success once again,” Mr Yeomans said. “This not only involved those who transported the guests to the party, but also all those who helped behind the scenes, including the servers of the food.”
The event remains a vital part of the Rotary Club’s mission to support local residents, providing an opportunity for social connection and festive cheer during the winter months.
