Work due to start on next phase of Wellington regeneration

The works will tie in with the ongoing major regeneration of Wellington including the construction of a new Civic Quarter and are planned to improve the connection between the main shopping area of Wellington with the new Wellington Civic Offices and leisure centre.

A small paving scheme will link the new Wellington Civic Centre, providing access from the new Civic Centre to Wellington town centre and Wellington Market.

A pedestrian build out will provide a link from the new Wellington Civic Centre into Wellington Market and a raised section of road in front of the new Civic Offices will make crossing easier for pedestrians and encourage traffic to travel slowly.

The work will use similar materials to those used in the rest of Wellington, the junction of Walker Street/Bridge Road will also be narrowed to endorse the current one way system.

Street clutter will also be removed and any outdated signs and road markings replaced, including marked disabled bays, litter bins and seating will be provided in key locations.

Parking restrictions will also be reviewed to allow limited parking ( 30mins waiting with no return within the next hour). All parking will remain free.

Council deputy leader Richard Overton, who has special responsibility for Borough Town Development and Policy, said: “This is a very exciting time for Wellington with the completion of the Civic Quarter phase of the regeneration scheduled for the autumn.

“We are beginning the works on Walker Street to tie in with that and the aim is to make the area safer, more pleasant and pedestrian friendly. Inevitably there will be some disruption but this will be kept to an absolute minimum where practically possible. Access to businesses will be kept open throughout the site works.”

Telford & Wrekin Council has fully consulted with local residents and businesses ahead of the work commencing. Wellington Town Council is delighted to endorse and support these proposals.
