Work continues following Shrewsbury pathway collapse

The eastbound section of Hazledine Way, between Meole Brace roundabout and Pritchard Way was closed for safety reasons following the collapse on Sunday.

It is though the collapse was caused by an historic well located beneath the road.

Shropshire Council says contractors will repair the hole as soon as possible. However, they expect that this section of road will remain closed for the next few days.

It is hoped that the repairs will be completed, and the road reopened, in time for the Elton John at the nearby Greenhous Meadow stadium on Saturday evening.

The hole will be repaired by filling the cavity with clean 40mm quarry stone, a 2m thick concrete slab will then be placed over the hole to completely seal it.

A new manhole will be created to monitoring and observe the well before the road and pavement are re-laid.

Diversion Route
Severn Trent’s contractors have re-opened a section of Wenlock Road which was previously closed, and through traffic will now be diverted from

Meole Brace roundabout, eastbound along Oteley road to Weeping Cross island, and via Wenlock road, column roundabout and Haycock Way to Pritchard Way.

Access westbound along Hazledine Way (i.e. towards Meole Brace roundabout from Pritchard Way) remains unaffected.
