Shropshire school closure consultation ends today

0

On February 8, Shropshire Council announced proposals to close nine schools and federate another twenty in Shropshire. At a meeting of the Council’s Cabinet on 15 February, the consultation on the proposals was approved.

As part of this consultation parents and the wider school communities were asked for their solutions to the problems that the schools are facing.

During the consultation parents and teachers have been vocal about the plans. Public meetings were held for each school involved in the consultation, and a number of pupil’s parents and those involved with the schools took park in marches in both Shrewsbury and the TUC march in London.

Faye Moore, from Stiperstones CE School, steering group wrote to Council bosses as Shirehall outlining a list of mistakes she claims are contained within a consultation document.

Schools in the proposals set for closure before 2013 include:
– Ifton Heath Primary School (to merge with Rhyn Park)
– Shawbury Primary School (to merge with St Mary’s on the site of Shawbury Primary School)
– Barrow C of E School, Broseley
– Hopton Wafers CE (Controlled) Primary School (pupils will be offered places at Cleobury Mortimer)
– Lydbury North CE Primary School
– Maesbury County Primary School (pupils to attend Kinnerly)
– Onny C of E Primary School (pupils to attend Stokesay School)
– Stiperstones C Of E Primary School
– Wakeman School & Arts College (pupils to attend Meole Brace School)

Under proposals twenty schools would also federate in Shropshire sharing Governors and resources.
